I just noticed today I have a tire that is nearly flat. I have no idea how long it has been like this, maybe as long as a week! Is that bad? Can I damage my car driving on a barely inflated tire? Is it bad to just fill it back up with air? I can't afford to replace it right now so that's really my only option.

Depends on how low it is. If it's completely flat and you've been driving on it, theres a chance that the rim could have damaged the tire, in which case you'd  need to get a new one.

I wouldn't say it is completely flat, I can push it in about an 1/8 of an inch. it is extremely low though. I'm going to fill it up ASAP. I really just need new tires for my car, no damn money though :(

Fill the damn thing or change it out with your spare.   Either way, go to a tire repair shop and have them look at it.  You probably have a nail or screw lodged in it somewhere.  As long as it is not lodged in the side of the tire, you can get it fixed for about ten bucks.

It might be that you have a valve that is leaking, which cost about five bucks to replace.

You should not drive too much on it before getting it filled or you will damage the rims and perhaps the tire itself.  Then for sure you'll need a new tire.  But a low tire may indicate a leak somewhere as described above.  Or it could just be low and filling it might fix it, but probably not.  That's why I suggest you go to a tire shop.  They'll overfill it and check for leaks.

You should be more like Cantrip.

cool, thanks for the advice. my car only has a few hundred more miles before it goes in for scheduled service so I'm hoping I can just fill the tire back up and wait until then, way less hassle that way. maybe I'll be able to afford new tires then too.

if you have been running on a flat for long then you more than likely have damaged the tire wall. get it checked/replaced immediately, don't wait to do anything.
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

Well . . . you can fill it and see if that fixes the problem, but I would go to the tire shop anyway.  If there is a nail in your tire, it could be the weak point which causes what is commonly called a blowout.  And that can make you dead.

So, is your life worth less than the dime bag you're smoking now, which is what it would cost to be sure?  Or do you smoke the good stuff, which is currently clouding your judgement? Do I sound like your father?

Chaney, I'm your father . . .

haha, yeah I understand. blowout = BAD. Here is what I will do and it should present the best of all options:

1) This evening I will spend the $.75 it costs to fill the damn thing back up.
2) Tomorrow I will call the dealer and get my next service scheduled for this weekend - I'm sure I can talk them into doing it a few hundred miles early.

Hopefully they will be able to fix whatever is causing the leak and won't have to replace the tire cuz in that case I will be fucked and will have to risk my life everytime I drive for the next several months until I can afford it.

Thanks again for all the advice.

if you think yer tire is leaking repalce it immediately. no procrastinating. put on the spare now.

my nearly father lost control of the car the other week when we were all in it because we had a slow puncture and didn't realise til 300 miles into the journey... the tire had really thick walls or something and you couldn't notice it was low till the wall caved in.
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

If you take it to Sams Club, even if you're not a member, they will fix the flat tire for FREE. I've done it here before in Tx, wouldn't hurt trying there.

If you go to a service station in my city (dunno about state) you can get air in your tire for free

re: Sam's Club - they are owned by Wal-Mart so I am boycotting them.

re: Paying for air - yeah it used to be free when I grew up, now it's 75 cents for about 5 minutes of air everywhere I have seen.

Get that funky paste that you inject into your tire, inflate your tire and drive around abit. The paste will cover the innards of the tire sealing any possible holes that you may have.
