Best place to start id a parking lot. And don't be afraid of going down, that is something that you have to prepare for before you go riding. I t doesn't matter how good you are or how safe you are. I rolled my bike (06 suzuki gsx-r 750) off the showroom floor last summer and 9 days later I was cut off by someone making a left in front of me. I was doing around 100km. I was wearing my gear so the damage to me was minimal. just a small hole in my arm pretty much. So I got my bike back this year and went out riding waaaaay to early in the season and too late at night and hit a  nasty pach of dirt in the corner. So down I go again. Had to replace a  few pieces and had to learn how to paint. There's really only two types of motorcycles...ones that have been down and ones that will be down. Don't want to scare you but shit happens. Just wear your gear and I would suggest frame sliders. they are cheap and can save you money if it goes down.
