I'm taking a break from hl2dm for a bit. It's changed since I firsted played it, and so have I. I used to love playing on the tomb, capping flags and chillin with my pDs buddies. I only now play ctf for like 20 mins a month, cause the dm side of hl2 got the best of me. Slowly and slowly more of the pDsers I loved playing with became inactive, left for a different clan, or just don't play as much as they used to. I started to only play dm maps and forgot about the ctf part completely. It's just not as fun as it was back in the day (about a year ago lol) as it is now. I find myself playing aim_arena 24/7 just to win and make myself look good, and that's not what I want. I used to care less how i played, and even made fun of the ones who make excuses when they get shot, or when they can't hit someone, cause they're "having a bad day," and i've found myself doing these things now. I've played this game too long to just stop playing all together, but I think a break is much needed. It's like say.... A new car, or something, you get it and it's the coolest. You love driving it, and you just want to drive it all over the place. But later on, whether it's months or years, it's not as fun as it was, it's just another boring car. I know none of this is really making sense, it's kind of just a ramble, but I just want to get a couple things off my chest. Something Nerco said kinda made me realize:

"I have no desire to use scripts or exploits which has became the norm in HL2. I consider it cheating and even considered banning it from our server. Hax can’t be competitive unless we fly around 100 miles an hour or using a hit box hiding invinci-jump and I wont be doing that. I also have no intention to insist that our members learn that crap. Makes you wonder why we are so popular and so called elite servers are dead huh. 85% of the people who play want to have a good time not get walked over by someone they can’t catch. It’s bad enough for them to play against good players let alone whining exploiters who complain about RPG’s, nads, and orbs. Its funny, I mean WTF else can a newbie do but spam those weapons. If I took hax in the direction I wanted to go we would most likely lose half our members, and I think it’s easier to just step down and do as I please."

I try and play ctf more to see if i can like...jump start my ctf buds again and get back into it, but it doesn't really work. I've become what I once mocked, and it got me thinking a lot. I know this is total "nerdish" but hl2 became a part of my everyday life. Get home from school, play a bit of hl2, do homework, go skate and so on. So that kind of made me hate the game in a way, I think that's why I'm writing this. Also the fact that a some players have left are fun clan, to be in more competitive clans, and a few scrims here and there would satisfy my competitiveness. To me, hl2 has changed for the worst (in a whole) because a lot of people now play to win, and be the best, instead of why we all started, to have fun. I'm not disappearing completely, i'll still be around the forums and occasionally jump in a game, and if you guys really need and extra person for a scrim, i'll be happy to jump in. And hopefully when I make a come back, the tomb will be back up and better than ever. But until then,

this is turboninja (kai) hanging up his hl2dm coat.

Breaks are always good, i have taken some in the past, and I havent been playing much lately either.

Fun, i believe, has taken three forms in my "world." Its the atmosphere of a clan, the server settings (whether modded or not), and scrims. Sometimes, like for me as an example, i prefer scrimming, since i have changed alot since i first joined.

Whenever i played with you, it was fun. i dont know if you are going to hard on yourself, or its something i cant see by playing across the internet. but take a break, its well deserved.

good luck with those skating videos, turbo. hope everything works out the way you want!

Don't expect us to ever make a return to DM (popularity wise). The game is ruined forever.

Plagued by bugs and no support, nothing was ever done to normalize the gameplay into something long-lasting.

There are no newbie players anymore. All the "pros" drove them away in droves over the past year. A new payer cannot pick this game up. Period. I blame the HAX guys as well as people like Puffer, etc. I learned long ago that coming into a game with no clue, and finding that you are the only one in the server who doesn't have the game down, you quit as quickly as you joined. First impressions are generally everything.

There are little to no "fun" players anymore because, let's face it, what's fun about getting steam-rolled?

I hope you find what you're looking for. See you in October for TF2.

I think WDFs assesment is a bit too harsh, but he's definitely on the right track. HL2DM is not a game someone new to multiplayer FPSes can jump into easily. Valve treats it like their retarded stepchild and rarely fixes anything in it, when they do they often do it halfassed and break lots of shit. Most of the good players are hyper-competitive and mock noobs while they pwn them. That said, I do love it. It is a lot of fun, especially if you don't take it so seriously to want to be the best. That's one of the major reasons I joined pds in the first place, it's all about having a good time and not taking shit too seriously.

If you find yourself taking pixels on the screen too serious then a break is a good plan. Either that or start getting drunk before you play.

hl2mp is one of the most unique deathmatch concept games ever.

And they let it decay. That's all I'm saying.

Indeed. I have no doubt that if Valve had actually taken it seriously and tried to actually support it there would be several times as many people playing it today. Considering how many copies HL2 sold the size of the HL2DM community is pathetic. Obviously part of that is the fault of CSS, but HL2DM is such a completely different experience that there is no way CSS can take the blame. That rests squarely on Valve.

DM's dead, it's been dead. Whut's right, TF2 is gonna be pwn  until valve forgets about it and makes more css maps or something.   I'll be playing bf2142 (yeahiknowbf2isbetterblahblahblahgofuckyourself)  till tf2 comes out if you want to gamezor with senior shark.

What makes hl2mp so unique compared to all the other deathmatch games?  The physics and interaction with the environment (mostly through use of the gravity gun) can be fun, but for the most part it is just a novelty.  The weapons are the same as the single-player campaign.  The don't even include a decent sniper weapon.  I always want to plink off long distance enemies using a scoped rifle (TFC had a balanced sniper rifle, as did OP4).  Without a long-range weapon, gameplay is mostly restricted to short and medium range combat.  This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but not having a weapon like that is a restriction.

Team deathmatch is more of the same.  Different classes sure would add a heaping dose of strategy to the game.  Team deathmatch in hl2dm is more about brute force and individual skill than strategy on a team level.

you can snipe pretty well with a mag and zoom, but thats just me.

and yes, there are a large number of good players out there, and they are brutal to new players, some of the people i have encountered on random servers are just plain mean.

but the thing about tf2, i think i wont be able to stand the cartoonish look of the game.

You must be sore from all the abuse you took in CS.  Long distance kills require patience and skill (when the bullets don't travel at the speed of light).  Snipers in BF1942 and BF2 were powerful, but you had to get used to leading your target and guessing how much to do so.  Snipers can be a valuable part of a team.  I hate the AWP whores in CS(S) just as much as the next player, but they are effective.  Play to win.  Take advantage of whatever you can to win.

Not including a decent sniper weapon in HL2 and HL2MP was a major mistake.  CS(S) players are used to snipers.  HL2MP needs more players.  Not having sniper weapons turns CS(S) players off.  It makes it feel like Q3arena with the nonstop chaos.

Minus the "play to win" line, this is probably the only thing you have ever written that I don't disagree with.
