After a good 4+ years of solid service by Antec TruePower 420 has died valiantly defending my computer from the incompetent power company. I'm very sad and have begun a search for a replacement (may need to replace more, I don't know just how succesful the PSU actually was in its final moments). Unfortunately, my budget is very limited so I'm looking at the cheap end of the spectrum. I really only need something in the 350 range (assuming its true to spec). Anyone have opinions on quality low-end PSUs? I don't care if it only lasts a year or two just as long as it can put out its rated power and handle the occasional power drop, surge, spike, cut off, etc. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

thanks for the help everyone. I spent $40 on a 430w ThermalTake PSU. Supposedly it is pretty good, it's still got 5 eggs on NewEgg despite being reviewed almost 1500 times. This is the first non-Antec PSU I have owned since like 1996 or something. They are just too expensive these days for my budget right now :( Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

Heh my one lone adventure into non-antec cheapness cost me 3 hard disks and eventually a video card in what was later diagnosed as the quirky nature of power instability. Once I gave up dough and returned to the sweet honey coated whole-wheat antec goodness my string of bi-monthly hardware issues have stopped. In fact I was even able to regain some (not all) use of some of the hardware that had ceased to perform under the non-antec power management. So in other words.. Good Luck with that.. Once Known as Grumpy... Oh hell lets face it... I have and will always be Grumpy

this is why I spent $40 for the well-reviewed thermaltake PSU over $20 for some brand I've never even heard of even though I was really wanting to not spend more than $25. I wish I could afford to spend the $100 or so on whatever Antec is selling these days, but despite getting a raise recently I've been broke non-stop. Stupid fucking bills have all gone up more than my raise was, ergo I actually have LESS money now than I did just a few months ago. It's craptastic and depressing. Past two years now it has felt like the more money I make the less money I actually have. If it's more than just my PSU that got fried in the surge or if the new PSU fries stuff I am going to be screwed. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

All you small fries crack me up, go out and get some real power, anywhere above the 600W range and then you'll be cooking with gas. Hell, I went out of my way to future proof my rig and got myself the new X3 1600W Ultra for $340, that was an upgrade from a 550 X2 Ultra, WOW what a difference.

I do not understand needing anything over 500w unless you have an insane amount of shit inside your box. What is in your rig that you need to buy a PSU like that? Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

I was originally going to use this setup for an Intel Core 2 Quad QX9770 and a pair of Nvidia 9800GTX Ultra vid cards so the extra power from the PSU would be needed in that build. But since I have 2 wait for all that shit to come out then I may as well use what I have right now.

Ug, Thermaltake makes horrible garbage power supplies. They don't supply enough amps on the 12V rail and I believe someone here before had problems running a 6800GS with it.
If you still can, return that shit and buy a 380W Antec Earthwatts since they're built by Seasonic.
