how about increase the number of points you get for killing somebody to 250 max like you said
THEN, reduce the number of points lost by 90%.

So a newb would get 250 points for killing the top player, but then the top player would only lose 25.  How about something like that.  That way you can accumulate lots of points quickly, but you won't get raped for points if you have more then 30,000.  This will allow the loyal players to the server to continue enjoying their mega points it took them so long to accumulate, but also allow the newbs to the server to rack up a bunch in their first week.

Very well put.  I agree.

We actually tried this once before. The problem is that the stats plugin doesn't really report stats in an easy to understand way.

It reports like "xxx lost 150-120 points"

People got confused. Anger arose.

tell them to STFU and get over it. And I guess you could put in the MOTD or make it say it in those neat green letters.

i tried this the other day and it worked out pretty good, if you dont want to loose points, dont die, the "high" rankers should be more than just play time, if u want to be in the top u should have to earn it :P

If I may chime in =)

Having the most amount of points definately dosent say your the best. Even KD ratio dosent mean anything cause if you play as medic it will tank out. Points is like poker you risk alot u lose alot. If your the type than can take only calculated risks then you can hover in place or maybe even advance.

Points also say something about loyalty to the server once you got a few grand you feel part of the community and have an incentive to return.

I wouldnt mind losing a large portion of my points to anyone really. As long as it is fair across the board the strong will stay strong. If you think the game is better solo I feel sorry for ya but we are here to have fun together and attract other players.

Maybe we can have alternating months of Massive point loss for upper stats players and advertize it to other peeps so they can get in for the month and "Power Level". Then tone it down the next month so the point whores can relax and not have there ass so tight when being chased down by Whut laughing through his pryo mask.

War has a good point.
The idea is good also.
Points and K:D Mean something but not really anything at the same time to me. i dunno how to explain it =\
Besides, i already gave up on both, I just play w/e class nowadays and fool around. Although i do go Demo when i don't want to get steamrolled by the other team..

BTW Erebus, the whole K;D comment was just a lil joke.

I know you have a 4:1 or some crap but I dont know if i've ever seen you stray from being a heavy with 1-2 medics all the time while also defending all the time ;)

POINTS IS ALL I FREAKING CARE ABOUT ARGHHHHHHH DONT FREAKIN CHANGE IT ARGGGGGGGGG *RIPS OUT HAIR*

............. lol....
it used to give me an incentive to play the sever.... but i dont really care anymore. .. and just strive to improve my skills on playing classes instead of points......but hlstats is better at recording then the steam stats ... because all i ever play is tempest :O.... so...............Both war's and illenta's ideas are awesome.... either one would be good

I don't like losing 50 pts a kill now. I can't see how increasing that amount will make things better.

Points do not equal skill on the servers because we made it that way (see all the endyss posts). There is an imbalance because points lost per kill do not equal points gained. In other words the killer gets his x number of points. the assist guy gets his 5. The guy who got killed is not deducted the same number of points. We made it that way. Therefore the numbers keep getting larger. People who play more get more points and the top 10 always stays the same. It's not a bad system. It rewards loyalty and the people who care about points (can't understand why since it does not equate to skill) stay happy because their totals keep growing. From a new player or highly skilled player's point of view it suck though. You can never catch up. Here is the solution IMHO. For each event that leads to point gain there needs to pe equal number of points lost from somwhere else. If there is a kill then the total number of points gained by killer and the assist should equal the number of points lost by the victim. In case of cap, the total number of points gained by the team that scores should be equal to the total number of points lost by the other team. No points for building staff by engies (that should not be a source of points anyway) and also no points for destroying the engie'e stuff. That way no new points are introduced. Basically make it a closed system No points gained and no points lost. Everyone starts with 1000 points and points can only change hands. they can not be created. In this scoring system points will more accurately reflect skill. (and I'll probably rank much lower than now...lol) Just my .02

I see Whut's point. It's almost impossible for a lot of new players to reach the top ranks now. I've seen many 'LOL Leon Switch you're a loser you have 100k points'. I totally agree. I'm lame like that.

250 might be excessive if only we still keep earning 10 points for everyone we kill. Maybe we should let top players have high points for killing other top players.

I don't know if I'd hang back to avoid losing points. A lot of times I tell myself that I deserve the point loss because I could have avoided dying. Most server players are okay, so I don't feel that threatened by a constant steamroll of point loss. However I do get pwned continously at 2Fort.

Also, crits are the great equalizer. I think we should keep that in mind!

I agree with most everything that's been posted on this.   It's very true that I haunted this server initially due to  the points tracking and I really enjoyed watching my totals rise.   My primary concern in tweaking the system is that it be fair for all support classes.    Keeping in mind the Medic especially.   He lives for the kill assists.

Out of the gate we need to decide what we are using this system for.    I've put in my time so I can get somewhere near the top but I have no illusions that I will get much higher than I am.    I appreciate the fact that it's fairly obvious that this system rewards loyalty over the skill.    I do admit to some quesiness when I see myself hit for 50 points from someone just past the beginner's threshold.

Bitch's points regarding the assists makes sense.   I personally never saw an issue with Engy's getting points for building items. That's their role.    And clearing out said objects is just as important as well.

Include the cost of the assist in the deduct total but keep the points for the hardware that folks build.

That all said, I can take it or leave it at this point.   The important thing is to get more folks playing on the server.

As long as we're talking points - I noticed that sometimes when I play spy and get killed, I get "2 points for killed object: Spy"

That's because we've all been playing here for 6 months now. I see no reason to punish the loyal players to reward some n00b that may not stick around.

I agree points aren't about skill, even though the points are listed as "skill points". It's more of a badge of honor, being able to say I've played 'this' long and so have 'these' points to show. Again, it goes back to punishing those who play.

It also forces some people to change playstyle. Or at least class. I hate rushing into the enemy if they have a bunch of n00bs, because I might get killed a lot and lose 50 pts each. Not worth it to get 1pt. Especially if I'm not playing a soldier. I'd rather turtle and play an engineer and get 5 pts for building a turret and another 5 for building a dispenser. That sucks, because I like playing a pyro and sometimes a demoman.

... and they won't, even if you DO change the points, so what's the point to change it other than so players that play some of the time can get a few extra points?

And if it isn't about skill, then why does it matter if they do get to top ranks?

Losing 50 pts now just plain bites. In a way, it should be the other way around : you get 50 pts for killing people because you have skill, not because you get lucky.

When we started out, we didn't get 50 pts a kill. Why should some n00b get it? They get 1,000 points to start out with. That's bonus enough.
