I think an antivirus/spyware can do the job since the only way to get infected is to go on malicious websites or download and run anything. I used to do certain security updates when i could do it but i'm using copied windows so... I dont say its bad to do it but i want people to be aware of what they do and dont  just run the updates like grandma does. You seem to know what you are talking about so its good for you but lets go back on the thread goal. He has to save bandwitch and i know by experience he can skip windows updates. I use zone alarm internet security suite and it will warn me before i run anything that can be malicious. Thats my "purist" opinion

p.s. matrix and magics is a prejudice i have about people in computer sciences that dress like matrix, play magics and fakin ruin our reputation

it largely depends on what you're PC is used for. if you have any kind of personal data/financial info on yer PC ye'll want to get them security updates. you can be as good as gold and it only takes one dodgy ad on google or what not to potentially cause trouble (worst virus i got ever came down this way, i just accidently clicked on it trying to click something near it). it's simple risk analysis. most prefer not to take the risk. Yer never completely safe on the intarwebs no matter what you think.
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

I reccomend everyone to use this http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm. You Don't need to Download anything so it will not slow your computer down, Its actually FREE, And its the only thing that has removed the Internet Explorer Add-On Viruses finally! =]

OR, You can download it, 90 Day free Trial, Will probally slow your computer down, But this however protects your Computer constantly.

http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-gb/default.htm

EDIT: Actually this program does not slow down your computer at all and has acually speeded it up as you can configure what starts up on your computer, Its very good, It has picked up much more things than the Norton Anti-Virus, Norton lagged the hell out of my computer.

Those BHOs (browser helper objects) are normally bad news. At least the ones with no name. The windows ones are from microsoft. You can manually disable those.

In IE, click TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > PROGRAMS > MANAGE ADD-ONS.

There, you can disable all the virus acting ones, including all the stupid ones that Yahoo and ICQ and those other programs give you.

Sam Hall is right. I also work in a computer shop, and while Norton is more user friendly, it is the last antivirus program I would ever reccomend installing. If we get computers that are running slow, and they have norton installed, 9 times out of 10 removing norton fixes everything.

That being said, let's look at the picture from Georgy's post:

Georgy wrote:

See it in the bottom right corner? ....Could it be? .....Norton?

Automatic updates are meant to patch up holes in Windows' security system. I have never seen them slow down a machine, even XP SP3 which I am testing at work now (It's still only a release candidate).

I don't run any antivirus software on my computer. I took a full system backup when only Windows was installed and all up to date, with Steam and all ym games. If something goes wrong, screw Virus recovery, I will slap the Image on. But no viruses so far.
