As many of you know, I am a high school English teacher. I teach Sophomore English and Technical Writing (a senior English class for those students whose plans are something other than college). One of these days, I'll get the Tech Writing class's Beowulf movie uploaded to YouTube (if the school ever unblocks it). Until that time, some friendly advice. Edit yourself! Before you hand something to a teacher/boss/associate, make sure you haven't made a silly error.
Two of my favorites from research papers this year:
"Scotland is home to one of the biggest bodies of fresh water in the United States." (My favorite)
"Andrew and Abby Borden were hatched to death." (Don't take offense, Murdy - this student doesn't know your hatcheting skills)
Edit: Another one: "Lee Harvey Oswald was comforted by more Dallas police." and from the thread down the way, "Some people were even confected of making crop circles." Spell check will not catch these errors!

I regularly slip /b/ references into my essays. The best reaction I got from a teacher was just a series of question marks. Oh, and delicious copypasta: Okay, these are analogies and metaphors found in ACTUAL high school essays, so these aren't made up. 1) Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master. 2) His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free. 3) He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now he goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it. 4) She grew on him like she was a colony of E. coli and he was room-temperature Canadian beef. 5) She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up. 6) Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever. 7) He was as tall as a six-foot-three-inch tree. 8) The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife's infidelitly came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free ATM. 9) The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't. 10) McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup. 11) From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you're on vacation and Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 instead of 7:30. 12) Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze. 13) The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot grease. 14) Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 PM traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 PM at a speed of 35 mph. 15) John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met. 16) He fell for her like he was a mob informant and she was the East River. 17) Even in his last years, Grandpappy had a mind like a steel trap, only one that had been left out so long, it had rusted shut. 18) The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work. 19) The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while. 20) He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was acutally lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine or something. 21) The ballerina rose gracefully en pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant. 22) He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up. 23) Her eyes were like limpid pools, only they had forgotten to put in any pH cleanser. 24) She walked into my office like a centipede with 98 missing legs. 25) It hurt the way your tongue hurts after you accidentally staple it to the wall.

I have a few things to get off my chest:
I hated The Scarlet Letter, Beowulf, and Hamlet. I sparked-noted every single one and swindled my teacher into thinking I actually read it. If she knows I didn't read it, then she became submissive and still gave me A's. I think the English AP test is complete crap considering I simply clepped out of every english I had to take in college.
And I hated writing in a stupid journal at the beginning of each class about crap I didn't care about.
That's it. Post more funny and retarded things your students said! :D {pDs} Lead Salad: bike why did you change your name Jessica343: so I can get heals {pDs} Lead Salad: oh damn good idea {pDs} Lead Salad has changed their name to {pDs} Lead Salad (is a girl) Jessica343: hahah

The AP English test is an amazing invention. For anyone with the right education, it's a way to get out of stupid bullshit requirements in college. Hai, my high school forced me into 4 years of this and 3 years of that, now I want a specialized college education. What's this, GE courses? FUCK OFF. Oh, and from the Great Gatsby, I remember all the ballin parties gatsby was invited to. Scarlet Letter was awesome, and Amy Tan should die. But Richard Wright writes the best novels (Black Boy, The Outsider.) silverwasp wrote:Be careful what you wish for... I have 10 younger siblings and I am only 20....

But Richard Wright writes the best novels (Black Boy, The Outsider.) Actually he wrote that Gatsby frequently hosted parties. Damn that was almost 4 years ago.. I challenge anyone to beat that level of comprehension! Gatsby was.. ugh.. alright I guess. Fahrenheit 451 was the best, Hamlet was fine, Native Son was depressing. Probably the next best will be The Road, which I'm reading next week.

The civilizing force of grammer teachers will be felt amidst the forums and servers!
" I say, my good fellow, do you mind if I shoot this rocket up your arse?"
"Go right ahead, old chap. Thank you for asking." "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like ... victory"

Virus - I usually catch the rockets to the face. Tis very frustrating. Another quick "whoops" in a paper - "There have been instances when people were confected of making crop circles." I have read Gatsby, Hamlet, scarlet letter, etc..most of what you guys have mentioned. My favorite book, although i did not enjoy reading it at first is Albert Camus' The Plague. It is a great allegorical novel. One level is the general story and the other levels are various intepretations of the rise and affect of nazism. Very interesting when you connect the dots.

And everyone was afraid that I was going to be the grammar Nazi/Facist. (Although Lead Salad is correct in his correction - excellent work, my friend). Belligerent Pimp wrote: The Man Society just suspended my man card for a week for getting rickrolled by Mrs. Mary Midwestern Housewife.

For those having trouble writing that 15 page paper, here are a few tricks I used to help add a few extra pages. For the teacher in the clan, I have no guilt using these practices. I feel papers should be graded on content, rather than size. Rather, teachers should say "I don't feel you can adequately discuss the topic in less than 10 pages..." If a student can properly fulfill the assignment in 9, so be it. Anyways, here are some tricks to lengthen your paper: -line spacing 2.3 -right margin moved in a notch, might cause a few random sentences to start a new line pre-maturely -when the paper is complete, drop the bottom line of every page onto the next page But the best trick of all: -Using Find and Replace, change the font of all periods, commas, and quotation marks to size 14 (assuming you're using 12). This will expand your paper at an exponential rate. The more punctuation you have to begin with, the greater number of pages added. For example, a 13 page paper becomes 16 or 17 with the effect. Most importantly, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference when printed! Note: I have never been caught, even with the toughest graders. get your ass to mars
