So I'm thinking of getting out of the whole education thing. What can someone with a B.A. in English and a Masters in Education do for a living (and get benefits - benefits are important). The pay isn't as important, because, really - I've been teaching for four years. I'm used to crappy pay. Any good ideas? I'll listen and entertain anything right now. I'm thinking that I might be burned out (and it wouldn't break any of my student's hearts to see me go....)

You missed the important part of that - BENEFITS! Crawdad is still a student and we both have medical issues that require health insurance. Writing doesn't pay the bills (and it requires you to be creative, which I am not)

No you are not.  I can understand about burn out.  I would take whatever Summer break you have and do your searching.  I bet there are a lot of things you can do with your education.  Start searching now so when you have the time you can send your resume out.

Go see Avenue Q, the Musical.

The opening song is "What Do You Do With A B.A. In English?" I figure that's right up your alley.

Also, Gary Coleman is a character in it.

Also, "The Internet Is For Porn"

Need I say more?

That should give you all the direction you could need.

But really, I say follow ^^^ that guy threeposts above me's advice and use summer break to really scope everything out.

Well my advice for the health insurance thing is move to Canada. It's free. Hell,  I know for a fact that here in BC there is a great need for competent teachers. Assuming you dont want to leave the good ol' USA Im sure with a masters you can get a decent corporate desk job somewhere. Shop around.
I'm the leetest one here

work for the cable company.  If you have comcast in your area you can easily get a job at the call center making shit pay, but they have good benifits, and you get free cable n internets. Oh and they'll hire anybody  all you have to do is not know what your talking about and screw up work orders for us techs.

I don't get any of that shit cause i work for a comcast contractor, but since you want shit pay with benifits thats a good choice.

1) Stripper (if you can shake it)
2) Porn (if you cant)
3) Move to a civilized country with universal health care and become a writer
4) Journalism (hard to get into)
5) Editor (harder to get into)
6) Paralegal (probably have to do a year course for this though).
7) Librarian (probably very low level unless you get another degree?)

Why don't you want to be a teach anymore? It seems like a sweet job, minus the maggots and bitchy parents.

It's not the students that bother me. It's the parents. You were right about that.

I LOVE the teaching part, it's the dealing with pissed off parents that I can't handle. They are usually pissed off because their kids are terrific puppet masters. I can see the kids pulling the strings, "Dance, Monkey! Dance!!!"

In an abstract way, this is by far the best response. Why? Because it didn't specify what kind of writing. Being a good word smith, you might be able to look at marketing job or perhaps something in journalism. The more creative, the better. Personally I would throw out any perceptions of being tied into education just because of a degree in english and a teaching career. Sit back, think of whats fun, and go from there. I was an International Studies Major minor in german, european studies, now working at a start up company. Its nice because I'm wearing many hats. Marketing, graphics, webmaster, operations, etc. Dunno where you live, but you might want to consider working for a new age startup of some sort.
To give you better advice, we need pics of you, and your classroom. And my screen name written on your chalkboard.

Maybe teach someplace else? Or teach the minimum classes you need to keep your healthcare and get another job (maybe adjunct faculty at a nearby college? or internet porn from your basement?)
I have family in the same profession and their #1 complaint is crazy parents. It sounds like parents generally either don't give a fuck or are crazy fuckheads. If your principal will back you up you could probably give them a lot of pushback. I imagine a lot of fun could be had once you have tenure...
