I know not many of us here in the community are college graduates, in fact IIRC most of us are in college, or detoured straight into a career.

I register for classes today when I get off of work. I've been in school for 2 years already, so I should, considerable, have only 2 years left.

The only problem is that I don't really know what the hell I want to do. I haven't completed my GE, and I have minimal coursework completed related to my current major, International Business, Japanese concentration.

However, I'm leaning towards Accounting for the money, the ease of job placement out of school, and the potential for growth. My biggest fear, though, is that I'll become a living paper pusher.

Basically, I don't know what the fuck I'm doing, or why. I might double major International Business and Accounting, but what the hell would be the point? I don't see any time in which the two would coincide.

Ugh.

You'll be fine. Most important thing you can do for a job is use whatever connections your friends/family has. Are you looking into working for an international company? Living in Japan for a few years would increase your value a lot. Great thing about living abroad is that (surprisingly) nobody wants to do it because they're tied down (which you won't be) so there are usually jobs available.

Business degree's don't suffer as much from job availability due to specialization as some other degree colleges like the liberal arts or to a lesser extent sciences.   I have an International business degree and econ degree with a finance minor.  I havent had any employer say...naw...we are really just looking for a management degree.  And if i could pass the cpa exam i doubt i would have any problems getting a job with an accounting firm.

Now here is the advice I am going to give ya.  You are at 2 years....so if you are going to make a big change...like jumping from the business college to the science or engineering college at your university...then you better do it now so it doesnt delay you THAT much.  And don't every decide to not pursue a degree program because it looked interesting and fun, but just too hard or time consuming.  Or because it cuts into your WoW/TF2 time.  You will hate that you did that in 6 years and wished you could go back in time and fuckign kick your own ass when you aren't happy with your $30000 dollar educational investment.  So you will either live with it or spend alot of money and time correcting it in your late 20s and early 30s.

( That "kinda" happened to me...im not unhappy with my job or money or life ....I just wished i was doing something more personally interesting")  and i kick myself for not staying with Comp sci or engineering because i thought they would be too much work and wanted to chill alot in college.

It doesn't matter what you do.

Unless you're going to use your degree for your job, and that degree isn't in English, then any major will do.

My advice to you is get in and get your as quickly as you can.  I mean it.  The problem with higher learning is you tend to learn about life while you complete your degree and attribute the life-lessons to college, when in reality, you would have learned those lessons anyway.  It just happened that you were attending school.

So, if you want to look like a bad-ass, complete your double-major in completely different subjects.  However be prepared to be there longer than you anticipated.  At some point there will be core courses - the ones you absolutely need to take to graduate, but because of your double major there will be two courses, both absolutely necessary, both offered only once, during fall because the required follow-up courses can't be taken without that first course, but you'll have to chose between one or the other because they will be offered at the exact same time.  So, whichever one you chose, you'll be fucked because you'll have to be there another year to finish the core work for the other major.

Or you could get lucky and not have this problem at all.  I wasn't that lucky. Instead of waiting another year, I dropped one of them and graduated.

If you plan to go on to some kind of graduate school, fuck undergrad.  Get undergrad done as quickly as possible and do your grad work.  Your graduate work will define you.

If you don't really care, then still graduate as quickly as possible with whatever major or majors you think you can handle.

And just because you graduate with an accounting major, it doesn't mean you will be doing that for life. If you're like most college kids, there will be a pile of money you will end up owing for student loans.  It's always good to be able to pay those off and having a job after graduation would be a positive step toward that end.

Having a job is better than not having one and if one major increases your chances to find a job quickly after graduation, then there's no harm in pursuing a major that will accomplish that.

The problem some folks end up with is indulging their heart's desire in school, then finding out they shouldn't have done that because it won't get them employed with anyone.  To add to their woes, they are up to their eyeballs in debt and the only way to get by is to move back in with the folks and live in their basement for decades.

So, pick some major, any major, and get it done as quickly as possible.

@Giller:

Which is why I'm doubting myself. The areas I chose before now seem to me to be very dull and boring in retrospect. I know I have absolutely zero qualification to make this judgment, and it's great to hear from someone that has degrees and experience in those areas.

To what use are you applying your international business and Finance degrees?

My mom has a BA in engineering yet she's done 20+ years in the marketing/sales fields and managerial and director positions at various companies.  Your major doesn't always have to be directly correlated to your job.  Just find your niche in life through work experience and connections.  Or at least that's the way I see it.

lol, your qualification is that you're currently studying it and it's fucking boring. Stop thinking so hard, take some classes that seem interesting to you. If they are, take more of them.

That's what I've been doing, and I'm a year behind everyone else. If I keep it up, I won't get anywhere. THat's what spurned this line of thought in the first place.

Also, I should make note that my school is one of the nation's premier schools in Business and Economics, which I'm tied to ATM, and I have absolutely zero loans and don't plan on taking any. Not sure if it means anything to anyone.

LOL @ college.  I went straight into my blue collar and have never felt better.  I couldn't ever see myself sitting in front of a desk all day.  Theres also a popular misconception that without college you won't make a dime, totally untrue.  My suggestion is to quit school and learn how to weld or put a car together.

Well I basically have been using my degree to get fast-track management positions in the companies i have worked for.  Don is right you don't have to go to college to make money or be successful.   You just have a better chance at doing it faster with a degree.  Alot of companies will only promote into higher level positions the non-degree'd employees if they have been there for a long time and have built up experience and trust with the employer.  But they will outside hire a degree individual.  Again the non-degree person Can get there....just takes them a few more years than the other.

I have worked for Cargill as an assistant plant manager...quit that job because they moved me to god awful wisconsin and separated me from my wife (who was in grad school in a nother state).  Now I work for as an Operations manager in a logisitics company.  Not a sexy job but it makes me lots of money....and my wife is finally working as a speech pathologist so she is making even more money than me......My $ugar Momma.

So you don't know what you want to do the rest of your life now (I assume in your twenties) ?   Thank God for that!  So why do you have to finish school now or with your age cohort?  Take time off, learn a useful trade, travel the world, join the Peace Corp, enter the French Foriegn Legion, join the circus, become a surf bum, ski bum, just a bum, etc. etc.  Believe me, you'll have more than the recomended life allowance of drudgery and care this go-round,  so no sense in getting started with it already.   Remember that college is essentially a societal hoop you have to jump through to get a piece of paper that says you can put up with bullshit like the rest of us.  They aren't going to close down the halls of Higher Learning anytime soon and you'll enjoy it all more with a little life experience behind you.

God don't do that...you would be trading a campus full of tan good looking women for a tent in the middle of nowhere surrounded by a bunch of fat chicks with hairy armpits.  I dunno...maybe that's your thing.  But I have seen those Peace corp women...*shudders*

Yeah, the Fat Lady, the Bearded Lady and the Big Top Tent in the circus might not be for you.

Yeah but statistically it's evident that having a degree gives you way more options and that the people who earn the most money have degrees. You can be a dreamer and hope you'll end up like bill gates or whatever but in the long run it's so much more worth it to have a degree.

What's your hurry? If money is an issue, I can certainly understand, but if not, you will not get a better chance than now to explore a broad range of ideas and figure out what motivates you.

There is something to be said for staying the course, however. Having a degree in business or econ allows a pretty broad array of possibilities, as many degrees do (my sister majored in English at USF and now works for a multibillion dollar mutual investment firm). It at least tells people that you were able to achieve at least a minimum required level of stick-to-it-iveness above a lot of less intelligent or motivated people who decided that playing with toys (cars, what have you) was more fun than doing homework.
