I'm currently taking a double major, intentions of getting a doctorate in some field of mathematics, perhaps number theory or something, as well as a masters in aerospace engineering.
I have no f-ing clue what job I want with these degress...what I know that makes it worth it is that at some point in my future I will be working on alternate non-combustible propulsion theory. I think the mistake a ton of folks make with schooling is trying to pick a major that matches their dream job. The problem with this is so few people have a dream job. Most folks instead have an ideal of what they would enjoy doing. If you're not sure what this is, take anyones advice and you'll be no worse off. You got at least 60 years ballpark of life, that sounds like little but it's a ton. Another year off the clock is no big deal. The main mistake you can make is taking either a very non-marketable degree such as english or an art, or taking a very specialized degree in a science that you have no interest in pursuing. If you're thinking anywhere in the world of business, take classes along an M.B.A route. You won't go wrong and at some point you'll figure at least a small part of your shit out and be succesfull. Worst case you aint, keep making enough to live, and still have a good time. It's life, don't let it be a bitch and it won't be.

Don's right. College isn't necessary to be successful. I'm sure not going to college is a lot less stressful for don than for me having gone to college cuz now i have 4 less years of work experience under my belt and 60 grand in student loans to pay off... While don is taking fatty vacations with his family and rollin on dubs, getting high on shrubs, i will be writing fatty checks and eating not so fatty bowls of top ramen for the next decade. Nothing like starting your life off with a fat loan to pay off, not to mention two maxed out credit cards.... Yea, blame those on all of the books i bought and weren't able to return for the measely 10-20 percent i paid because of some bullshit excuse to keep my money, like the ever popular "the new edition is coming out" or the "that course isn't being offered next quarter". Now i have some 15-20 philosophy tomes that i keep next to the fireplace in the winter cuz the pages make GREAT kindling.

You spent 60 grand on a philosophy degree? Jesus I hope you have your grad or doctorate man, else you got fucking Ripped off! Wtf would you do with an undergrad philo degree?
Thats the problem with those liberal arts majors....nobody wants them except high schools and marketing firms. Unless you have your grad or doctorate. Quote:

Trying to figure out what to do with oneself after two years of college can be tough for some. I was in the same situation after two years, I wanted the money but didn't see myself behind a desk pushing papers. So I did something a little different, I got a full time trade type job while going full time to school at night. Did I mention I also joined a professional off road racing team.
So while I was earning a degree, I was also learning a trade and having a little fun a few months out of the year. As time passed, I left the racing business and concentrated on school and my trade. A few years after school was finished, the company I was working for was closing down and everyone I knew was looking for work. I was one of the very few that were able to have a job the very next day after the plant shut down, as a Manager of manufacturing engineering. Do you see where I'm going with this?
After doing the management thing for a number of years, I was at a point in my career that I didn't need the management title anymore to make the big cash. So today, I am one of the Senior New Technology Design Engineers for one of the largest companies of it's type in the world all because I gave myself multiple options early on.
BTW, the engineering stuff comes natural to me, so I did this with a business degree. So stick with the school, keep an eye open for a entry level job in something you like to do and have a little fun while doing it.

Could be worse...coulda put 4 years into art school only to find your credits don't transfer and you have to start over. I am no stranger to having no idea what to do with myself. I've gone from Animator/3D designer -> Journalism -> History. Still have no idea what I'm doing. I just know I like history.

Im one of the few university students who doesnt beat around the bush. Yeah I go to get a degree, but honestly one of the main reasons I went/am going to university is to postpone reality for 4-5 years. University is friggin easy compared to blue-collar work. I do a double major in Politics and history. History because I love it and Politics cause I can actually use it to get a job here in Canada. Its sadly true that most degree's go to waste if you dont plan carefully. However if you plan carefully even the seemingly useless degree's like english can get you somewhere. For instance with my Poli Sci degree I may apply to work in CSIS or even in the UN if I so desire. It's all about careful planning. Keep your options open and your good to go. Sure my dream job is a gig in Interpol but I have other options. Also most university students have to deal with loans which suck big time. In USA universities appear to rob students so you people probably have more than I do. Going into my final year I only have 15000 Canadian to deal with. Pretty cheap compared to American schools even without my scholarships I would estimate around 25k. Not to shabby. I'm the leetest one here

Theres also a popular misconception that without college you won't make a dime, totally untrue. My suggestion is to quit school and learn how to weld or put a car together . When I was 20 I could tell people I'd spent 2 years dealing with and helping customers with technical devices and internet access as a senior-level technical support representative. My friends could say they sat behind a desk for 2 years. When I was 22 I could tell people I'd spent 2 other years programming professionally for a company with an international customer base; and also dealt with sales, accounting, and support departments in both coding-related and general projects. My friends could say they sat behind a desk for 4 years. Now at 28, I'm the lead user-interface designer for one of the world's largest content distribution networks, with secondary skills in customer support, *nix systems administration, and MySQL database administration; making $60,000/year. My friends brag about having a 4-year degree while they struggle to find jobs making anything close to $20/hour. While I'll be the first to admit I've had an extreme amount of luck at being at the right place at the right time, the point of this is that there's really no substitute for professional experience; not just knowing how different things work, but knowing how they work together on a day-to-day basis. But part of my luck has also been in finding jobs that won't discount people out of hand because they don't have a degree. Needless to say I don't consider going to work right away being "detoured", and rather see going to school full time as that. But hey... that's me.
