Seems like we have a lot of nVidia fans.

Term, since you've got a 550W power supply, you could save up some more clams and go for something like a 9800GTX, or possibly even a GTX 260. I only recommend ATi if you are building a gaming rig for someone else.

My Wallet Says No.

Compelling reason anyone?

At almost every price point >$50 ATI smacks nvidia around with the notable exception being ~$110 where the 8800 GT wins.

Im looking at the ATI Radeon HD 3870 now, for £99 ($200) But do I realy want to spend that much on a graphics card? At the moment I can play my games almost at max graphics settings anyway...

In a couple of years will the need be there to buy another card that will handle that generation of games?

eh, its his choice.

but with all the drama surrounding nVidia and its cards breaking down (supposedly all 8-series chips are fucked left and right), and nvidia just trying to cover it up is making me nervous. if something really is wrong, and nvidia refuses to acknowledge it, this issue could bring them down in flames...
I haven't had any problems with my 8600GT yet, I've had it for about a year now. I think that nVidia actually has better support than ATI though. Take when Vista came out for example. Suport for openGL graphics was not provided by Windows, so it was up to graphics cards manufacturers to hardire some openGL support in with their video drivers. nVidea had this done months before ATI. I'm sure that nVidia has their share of problems, like any big corporation, but I haven't stumbled across any meyself.

My preference is Nvidia also.

That does not disappoint me at all.  If you want to be horribly dissatisfied with your purchase that is your business.  Just kidding.  Whatever it is just make sure it will carry you awhile.

I can go either way on this I like both cards but for bang for the buck I would look at a 4850. I think it is all a matter of how much your willing to spend.
