What does it matter if it was a stupid or unworkable idea, so long as it was a bipartisan stupid and unworkable idea? HolyJaw wrote:In the end, everything Endyss said.

It was less stupid than the original idea. My point though was that this is really bad politics. The bailout is hugely unpopular and McCain has injected himself into it in a way that makes it way easier to place the blame on him now instead of having that blame diffused by the cover of bipartisanship. After getting beat up over the economy he's trying to show that he doesn't suck at it but instead stuck his head into a big pile of shit. The supposedly canceled debate will go on, his supposedly suspended campaign has continued unsuspended, and now he's in even a worse position than before. It's totally fucking nuts. It's the craziest campaign ever run. I bet the tell-all books that come out about it next year are going to be hilarious. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

http://www.forbes.com/ho...x_jz_bw_0923bailout.htmlhaha quote from the article: Quote:
In fact, some of the most basic details, including the $700 billion figure Treasury would use to buy up bad debt, are fuzzy.
"It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number."

Now things get interesting. The bailout deal got killed by the House GOP earlier. The markets are in freefall (last I saw nasdaq was down 10%!!!). The credit crisis is starting to knock down more banks around the world, I think at least a half dozen in the past 24 hours, mostly in Europe. Inter-bank lending continues its decline. GM hasn't found a solution to its line of credit problem and won't meet payroll by the end of the week, who knows how many other companies are in the same boat. If this holds on it's going to be a lot. The whole thing really may be coming apart. I don't remember if it was in this thread or another one, but I mentioned what a bad move it was for McCain to inject himself into the bailout negotiations the way he did. Now that his big bailout that he tried to steal credit for has failed he is extra fucked. To make it worse he's spent this morning trying to take as much credit for it as possible like he actually was a leader and the GOPers in the House gave a shit, but they fucked him good and hard. He gambled big and now he has lost big. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

The question is... how long until Bush declares a state of emegency and postpones the election? This is the stuff of Hollywood movies.

I'm going to call you on this one Dick. Look at the number of Democrats that voted against this. If the Democrats really wanted this to pass, they could have done it anytime they wanted(they only needed about 12 more votes). This had nothing to do with Mccain and mostly to cover their political asses. In a heated exchange tonight on O'Reilly with John Kerry, Kerry stated "What and we pass it and the Republicans point the fingers at us?" That kind of sums this whole vote.

Yeah, the deal going in was that it had to be bipartisan. If the Democrats wanted to they probably could of shaken an additional 12 votes, but by the time it became apparent that they were necessary it was clear that McCain failed to deliver his House faction there was no way out except to either own it or let it die. I think letting it die was obviously the better choice politically so I'm not surprised that's how it wound up, they are politicians and in the apportionment of blame the balance falls with the GOP for failing to deliver (they won serious concessions for their votes and fucking backed out) and with McCain for mucking the thing up by injecting the Prez campaign into an already delicate and messy situation. This thing is a big pile of shit, but at this point a bigtime bailout is the only way out and the only way to have a real bailout is if it is bipartisan. Until the McCain and the GOPers in the House get serious that's not going to happen. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

More Republicans voted no than Democrats. Additionally, of the congress people who made public comments from the floor only about 25% of the Democrats who spoke were against the bill, the rest argued for it. On the Republican side it was almost the opposite. Then vote time came and they threw McCain under the bus (after getting most of their stupid concessions, it's totally nuts!). Whatever deal gets worked out next isn't going to be substantively different unless the Democrats do something surprising, which considering what they have to work with and the seriousness of the crisis may be the only way out of this.
