Crawdad and I are looking at buying a car. New, used, whatever we can afford (keep in mind that I'm a teacher and he's a grad student and gets paid next to nothing). What car would you recommend for us? It needs to be big enough for me to drive carpool (that's four adults), but small enough to get decent gas mileage. We are going to eventually get a small truck to move the dogs, so the dog space doesn't need to be huge. Oh, and crawdad wants a moon roof. Go wdfnews, and find us our dream car! About the only cheap car I know of that comes with a moon roof is the Scion tC, and it's an absolute piece of junk. If you want to save tons of money on gas and don't mind the lack of a moon roof, pick up a pre-owned 2002-2003 Toyota Prius (don't waste your money on a 2004-present model unless you really crave the built-in gps). And hybrid owners get a special tax break from the government.
If the Prius doesn't entice you, shop around for other used Toyotas or Hondas. Japanese cars are way ahead of the curve when it comes to fuel efficiency and reliability (except over in Europe where Citroën and Peugeot are just as good). Stay away from American cars when shopping for a family/carpooling vehicle.

Two of the big three criteria in buying a car is stating if you want to buy new or used (and how used) as well as the approximate price range you're willing to spend. Win Cookies Awarded: 7 (bawwwwww)

You could try for a VW. Bus, Eurovan, jetta.. they're all pretty good. Actually I hear VWs are getting harder to come by recently because of their fuel economy and reputation as a "unique" liberal automobile

Knowing the price range is key. There are a lot of great cars out there (especially in the used car market), but it would be good to know where to stop on spending and a little more on expectations. That said, it sounds like you just want a comfortable, reliable, commuting appliance. These days the ovbious choice would be Accord, Camry, Altima, Civic, Corolla,...blah blah blah. I would shoot for something a little less common; especially since those cars are fetching a huge premium as people are desperate to up the MPG's. Recommendations: Sub $15k: Acura TL - you can get a decent used current-gen TL for mid teens Acura TSX - similar to TL Ford Fusion - decent midsize sedan, reliable Infiniti I35 - like 3 series, but with nissan reliability Mazda6 - the other white meat Mazda3 - super fun to drive, economical, reliable Subaru Legacy - solid car, AWD VW Passat - less reliable, but a great car Volvo S60 - super comfortable, solid build Pimp: Audi A4, A6, A8 BMW 3 Jaguar XJ8 Lexus LS 430 Lincoln Town Car Luxury SUV's selling at super low prices Mercedes 560 SEL, S, E Rolls Royce Silver Shadow get your ass to mars

I have to hype the Isuzu Rodeo whenever I can, though in this case its gas mileage probably isn't great. But it can fit 5 adults and have some storage room, or put the back seats down and have a bunch of storage room. I love the versatility of having both people and object storage. They're not making Rodeo's anymore, either, so you'd be looking used. Mine's 7 years old and I'm in no hurry to get rid of it. Not sure any would come with a moon roof, though, either.

I have no helpful info, I drove around in tiny 80s hatchbacks forever, cramped space but the mileage is awsome, more so if can find a good stickshift, I prefer to own cars with 5 speeds over automatics anyday, saves on gas. If you can find one, get an ancient VW Rabbit, like an 82 model, I had one ever since I was 16 and got rid of it 2 months ago and I'm 26 now, my dad drove it since he bought it and we drove that thing into the GROUND, till it could just not be fixed anymore, VW makes some solid cars, that, and I heard Toyotas last forever too. I hate driving new cars, its like driving a plastic box covered in cheap alumium siding. Go for the old stickshift hatchbacks. I also am seeing a huge trend going on where you can mod your car or truck into a veggie. just by converting to it run on used cooking oil. my friend drives a van that he calls "the magical veggie bus" kinda scary, but he's got photos of getting free oil from hooters and all the hooters girls outside filling up the car. It also smells like french fries when you get in the car. Makes you get the munchies.

i heart my 91 honda accord station wagon. sure its a grocerymobile, but it gets 29 mpg highway adn 23 city, and can go 0-60 in less than 7 seconds. also it has never broken down. ever. so yea. reliable, good milage, and a bit of oomph you wouldnt expect. plus mine is white and has a few dents in it, so i call it the millenium falcon. other than that, no helpful info :P Bah Weep Granah Weep Ninny Bong

The reason they don't make Rodeo's anymore is because my best friend from high school became paralyzed due to a structural integrity breakdown. His lawyer sued Isuzu and won. He is also the lawyer that sued Honda and won making three-wheelers illegal to sell in the US.
Sell your Rodeo, please. Thay are NOT safe.
