The first presidential debate is going on as I write. Is anyone else watching it? Giller and I are watching it together here (Cecilsan is here but he's not a politico) and we're playing a simple drinking game that anyone else is free to join in on: Whenever Obama refers to Change (in the noun sense, not like "I would change..."), take a drink. Whenever McCain uses the phrase "My friends...", take a drink. We're using Jose Cuervo, it should be a crazy night! Come, let us make fun of the candidates together! We're three shots down and only 25 minutes in. Edit: Obama apparently does not like being told he doesn't know the difference between tactics and strategy. Gotcha politics moment! Obama supports sending more troops to Afganistan "as soon as possible." Thus, Obama supports the draft! HolyJaw wrote:In the end, everything Endyss said.

Okay, maybe the debates aren't as exciting as we'd hoped. Maybe the tequila is just taking it's toll. Here's Giller's clear response to both candidates' performances tonight: HolyJaw wrote:In the end, everything Endyss said.

I'm watching. I still can't figure out why McCain showed up for the debate after saying he wouldn't until the bailout deal was done, what a flip flopper! Anyways, debates thus far have been decent. McCain has had a few good moments, I think his shotgun attack strategy is going to backfire though - it just feeds into the desperate/liar narrative. You can tell that his confidence is shot, I guess his collapsing numbers are really getting to him. Obama has done fairly well, McCain keeps pushing him into wonk territory which makes him seem stiff and boring, and I think he is wasting too much time pointing out all the times McCain lies about him. It seems like he expects that McCain is actually going to debate honorably and isn't quite sure how forcefuly to respond when McCain pumps up the BS. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

I'm not sure what to think... I think the populous will say McCain won this round, but the way he fought it was questionable. He very clearly changed context on the Iraq debate; Obama's points were about going in originally and McCain always "retorted" that just recently we started doing well. Uhm... those are different subjects. At one point McCain got visibly angry, which is worrisome in a president, and he was very condescending by repeatedly saying Obama "doesn't understand". He's obviously trying to point out his own experience and that he "understands", but who in the world hasn't been the young person being talked down to like that by an old person? I'm curious how many people fell for that shit...

Pretty uneventful. Was kinda funny seeing Obama flustered, but that was about all. Shoulda added praising each other and agreeing to the shots list.

Shoulda added praising each other and agreeing to the shots list. I can't say I saw that but it was amusing to see McCain not understand the concept of negotiations...

Shoulda added praising each other and agreeing to the shots list. I can't say I saw that but it was amusing to see McCain not understand the concept of negotiations... My favorite McCain=WTF moment was when he claimed that Musharaf came to power because Pakistan was a failed state and then said something about "those of us who were around back then". It was totally fucking insane and I'm surprised he hasn't really been jumped on for it. If Obama had said it everyone would be talking about how he is clueless and out of his league or something, but McCain gets a pass because everyone knows he is a liar who will say anything to win the election. So for those of you who are ignorant of the world: A) Musharaf came to power in 1999 so "those of us who were around back then" includes everyone on earth who isn't a child. B) Musharaf came to power by leading a military coup against a democratically elected government. The other funny thing was when McCain got all cranky at Obama because Obama said he'd kill bin Laden and any other al Qaeda fuck even if they were in Pakistani territory. Well I have to admit that bothered me a little bit. I hold borders as very sacred things. I support WW2 because Germany was violating others' borders. I support the Gulf War because Iraq invaded Kuwait. Though I ultimately support our invasion of Afghanistan, I think we should have tried negotiation longer. I absolutely didn't support our invasion of Iraq the second time - especially unilaterally - due to Iraq not having stretched outside its borders. So for Obama to say he'd openly infringe upon Pakistan's borders... I really couldn't blame Pakistan or others retaliating against us.

They're just lines on a map, they cause as many problems as they solve. In the case of bin Laden and crew, Obama's position is that if we have actionable intel that we can lob some missiles up his ass we'll invite the Pakistani's to help us out and if they don't we'll go ahead regardless. I agree it is a fundamental violation of sovereignty, but frankly if they're not willing to help us kill bin Laden then fuck 'em (not that I blame them, to them we're the boy who cried wolf and then shot the neighbors mangy dog). I generally think that things like crimes against humanity transcend lines on a map, it's polite to ask permission first but it's a lot easier to ask for forgiveness after.
