A sentry gun can work anywhere, if you need to have somebody hold back and defend, an engy isn't a bad choice. Because you aren't going to be able to push the lines with one of your soldiers holding back, and if your whole team is defending, a sentry gun is good, because either way the other team is going to have to uber in, and a sentry will take most of the damage, while your team mates kill the non ubered players. Plus it will force them to use a regular uber, and not krits, which is better for killing other players in general.
Yes but that isn't enough + you have to walk to get them and get into position. 100 metal for dispenser 130 for sentry, 400 for complete upgrade. 182 metal from pick up + it cost about 8 seconds. If a scout suicides, it's another 100 metal + less walk time and the scout is fast enough to get back into action before set up time is over. Also you need to have some sort of metal in your dispenser before they start hitting it. No point in having a level 3 sentry when you have 0 metal and only 200 metal to repair the sentry.
Sentry gun infact can go anywhere but is it useful? No. Why the ramp works because it covers both entrance to point B and covers long hall way exit.
You want to build inside the building of Point B? I'll hit it from outside shooting from the window while my other teammates cover me.
You want to build it on Point C? I'll shoot it from a long distance.
You want to build it on Point A? Same as C.
You want to defend Point A? Shame on you.
Gravel Pit is a FAMOUS map in CEVO and any other competitive plays. This strategy is used non-stop because it's more effective. Covering short hall way is nothing, they have to walk quite a distance before reaching the point in wide open space, while long hall way, they can just jump down and walk little distance. The most you can do at Point A is stall.
Keep in mind that EVERY sentry position has weakness and blind spots. Sentry is very easy to take out inwhich a kritzkrieg can still be used (even though you shouldn't on gravel pit).
I rather have a demoman and soldier cover it instead of a sentry gun with blind spots and weakness and it's immobile unlike the demoman and soldier. But in maps like gravel pit, I rather use a sentry.
Gravel Pit is A/D style while the 5-cp maps, you need the mobility of a team, not 5 mobile classes + 1 immobile class (engineer).
