epic fail!

FYI this guy is THE African-American scholar of our generation. He's written a fuckton of books, he's done documentaries for PBS, he's won the MacArthur genius award, he's a member of the fucking COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS! I've been in his neighborhood, it's quite nice. Yoyo Ma lives there, and that dickhole Alan Dershowitz. Pretty sure Kerry has a place there but their main home is in Beacon Hill. Basically this dudes neighbors are a big chunk of the Boston elite.

I'm not seeing your message. You saying it was stupid the cops thought the guy trying to get into his house was suspected of breaking and entering?

I mean, sure it sounds silly, but it could reasonably happen to any fool. Especially if the only documented quotes from the guy is him being a dick.

"We do not believe that this arrest would have happened if professor Gates was white," Counter said.

B-b-b-bullshit. The guy was being a loud asshole forcibly entering a residence. I'da called his ass in. Doesn't matter if he was Ghandi and Mother Theresa's love child. From the slant of the article, it makes it sound like Capt. Courageous here was going off on the same tired "It's 'cause I'm black" accusatory tirade that should have stopped working at the turn of this century. It was a mistake. Mistakes happen. Eat your veggies and write books.

Say I'm a cop. I get a report of "two black males with backpacks on the porch," with one "wedging his shoulder into the door as if he was trying to force entry." I'm gonna go check it out with my wits about me. I get there, the fellow in question is inside the house. I tell him I'm conducting a search and his response is "Why, because I'm a black man in America?"

"Gates continued to yell at me, accusing me of racial bias and continued to tell me that I had not heard the last of him," the officer wrote.

Yeah, real scholarly, jackass. You're being a dick and harassing an officer. Enjoy a disorderly conduct charge. The police reports only seal the deal, further detailing that the "scholar" was some kind of out of it.

Black people don't wear suits when they're trying to bust into a house. If a cop saw a white guy in a suit trying to get into his house and he said it was his own house, the cop wouldn't bat an eye. Of course the fucking pig was racist:

Quote:
Friends of Gates said he was already in his home when police arrived. He showed his driver’s license and Harvard identification card, but was handcuffed and taken into police custody for several hours last Thursday, they said.

Any reasonable person would look at the Driver's License and say HAY THE ADDRESS ON HERE IS THE SAME ADDRESS AS THIS HOUSE SHIT THIS GUYS LEGIT AFTER ALL.

Ch-ch-check out the police report, or at least read the article. When the officer arrived, he was inside the house. He presented his identification after being asked repeatedely to do so ( he was non-compliant ). He wasn't arrested for breaking and entering. He was arrested for disorderly conduct which was most *certainly* doing.

Fuck that bullshit. If some cop came to your house thinking you broke in, acting clearly under a racist presupposition, would you be nice to him? Scratch that, neither of us have experienced real racism. I'm white and I would be telling the cop to fuck off and get a warrant.

I find it hard to believe a harvard professor was causing enough ruckus to warrant a fucking arrest. ESPECIALLY AFTER PROVING HIS INNOCENCE.

A cop gets a report, there is a protocol for them to follow. Cop doesn't know who the guy is. Could be OG with a 'nine in his belt, could be a local professor, could be Robert Downey Jr. in blackface.

Cop was doing his damned job. He didn't invite himself the premises, he was sent there by a report of disturbance. Once they recieve that report, it is then *their duty* to go and investigate. The cop's presence on the premises was in no way racially motivated. He gets a call. He goes to the place. That's what cops *do.*

There are two official police reports documenting the same event with overlapping evidence and a third-party witness, NONE OF WHOM can be off-the-bat presumed as racists. The guy was out of line and was arrested accordingly.

I too find it hard to believe that a man of academia could do shit like this, but try believing the other end. That two cops and a third witness are conspiring to arrest a black man because they're all racists. WERN.

In the event of lol i can't find it, here's the police reports. read them.

I only see one police report. Is there another and a witness statement of some kind?
I hate to break this to you 3bam but police lie. If I can find it I'll show you the police report written which features me from when I was in college.

The link contains 2 police reports. There is no witness statement, but both reports acknowledge the third party ( the woman that phoned in the initial report bringing the officers to the scene ) That's as much evidence as anyone will have.

I'm saying that the fact that the "disturbance" was phoned in by an outside party during what could reasonably be mistaken for a break-in ( regardless of race, the guy looked like he was forcing entry. citizens are skittish and bother cops for shit like this ) negates the idea of conspiracy or racial motivation. There simply wasn't time for both officers to look at each other and say "let's arrest him because he's black and then fabricate reports about it teehee"

Oh right I forgot about section 420 item bullshit of the massachusetts state constitution:

"If a robbery suspect shows you his driver's license that has the address of the house in question on it it's totally rational to arrest the guy"

1. How can you say the cop wasn't racially motivated? Do you know him?
2. What makes you think a police report is the ultimate authority on an event?
3. The racism of boston police is well documented, experienced, and known. It might not be as prevalent as it was in the past but don't think that just because massachussetts has gay marriage that everyone holds hands and frolicks in the meadow together.

Put yourself in the cop's shoes. You get a call that some suspicious guy was seen at this house maybe trying to break in. You get there and see an old black guy in glasses and a suit. He seems pretty pissed off that you're at his house thinking he's a criminal (rightfully so). Maybe he talks a whole heap of shit to you. Sure, that's pretty discomforting to be called a racist even if you think you're not. But even after all this shit he says, he shows you his driver's license proving he owns the house and a Harvard I.D. that would strongly suggest this guy's not a criminal.

Now tell me why, reasonably, you should arrest him? Because he called you a racist and yelled and was really pissed off? This guy did literally nothing harmful at all. He said shit in his OWN HOUSE. Do you really want to live in a country where you can get arrested for talking shit in your own house?

I'm not claiming absolute certainty that the cop was racist, but it's very high on the list of possibilities.

He wasn't arrested for anything related to his property or his right to be there. He was arrested for disorderly conduct, a fact which all present evidence confirms.

Lead Salad wrote:

There is zero (0) evidence to directly support a claim of racism (given such a claim, direct and irrefutable proof involving the officers in question would be necessary ). Absolutely none. We must therefore assume he is of neutral character, the nature of a police officer.

Lead Salad wrote:

In this case, there are two (2) police reports that act as the only authority of this event. Without them, there wouldn't be a story at all. We wouldn't be discussing this.

Go right ahead. We'll wait.

I direct you again the nature of his crime and what exactly "disorderly conduct" means.
In this case:
engages in fighting or threatening, violent or tumultuous behavior

Note the use of the word "tumultuous." It's well outside standard lexicon, and was used repeatedly in both (all) reports to describe the subject's behavior. This reasonably implies use of the term corresponding with knowledge and therefore enforcement of long-established law. Police officers enforce the laws. Police officers *know* the laws. The police officer in question was arresting that man for breaking that law.

That's why, reasonably, he was arrested.

Lead Salad wrote:

According to evidence, the man was not in his house when he was arrested ( presumably when the officers made the decision to arrest ), but was following the officer bombarding him with accusations of racism. Up-and-out harassment, if nothing else. It's nailed on-point with these words from the report, if you still haven't read it.

Due to the tumultuous manner Gates had exhibited in his residence as well as his continued tumultuous behavior outside the residence, in view of the public, I warned Gates that he was becoming disorderly. Gates ignored my warning and continued to yell, which drew the attention of the police officers and citizens, who appeared surprised and alarmed by Gates' outburst. For a second time I warned gates to calm down while I withdrew my department issued handcuffs from their carrying case. Gates again ignored my warning and continued to yell at me. It was at this time that I informed Gates he was under arrest.

Now I ask a question. Do you really want to live in a country where a man may commit a crime but avoid punishment because his accusers are believed untrustworthy by a public with no knowledge of the matter?

The "disturbance" was this dude trying to fix his door! Do you honestly believe the cops would of been called if he was white? You really have no clue how racism works if you think cops explicitly conspire in the way you describe, behavior like that is significantly less common than cops assuming all black people are criminals and unconsciously treating them like shit. It's the classic "driving while black" shit, it happens to upper class black people and black people who don't live in "black neighborhoods" all the time. A similar thing happened to one of this guys friends, another prominent black scholar at Harvard treated like shit and threatened with arrest because he was black, it caused a huge shitstorm.
This guy lives in a neighborhood full of rich white people. He is fixing his broken door when one of his racist neighbor assumes no "coloreds" (because that's the polite term used by the racist old Yankee types) could possibly live in her upscale neighborhood. Pigs show up, nice old rich lady says there are niggers on the loose, cops go to this guys home and treat him like a criminal, even after he shows them his ID and thus establishing that it is HIS HOUSE (i.e. there is no crime) the cop is still trying to question the guy. Seriously, wtf? No crime, black dude is pissed off and calling you out on your racism, you apologize and leave. You don't fucking arrest the guy for being "tumultuous", you are the problem, GTFO!

From the article:
Quote:
He showed his driver’s license and Harvard identification card, but was handcuffed and taken into police custody for several hours last Thursday, they said.
The police report said Gates was arrested after he yelled at the investigating officer repeatedly inside the residence then followed the officer outside, where Gates continued to upbraid him. "It was at that time that I informed Professor Gates that he was under arrest,'' the officer wrote in the report.

The cop himself admits that he arrested the professor for yelling at him! What the fuck does he expect? Even assuming the improbable, that were he a white Harvard professor in this exact same situation, do you really believe the cop would of still arrested him? He comes into this guys home and totally disrespects him. You would have to be a bootlicking fascist not to be yelling at the cop. You can set aside the question of racism completely and it doesn't change how fucked up it is that the cop arrested him. Additionally, per statements from his friends, he is recovering from some kind of infection and apparently his voice is fucked up so it's questionable whether he was actually even yelling.

If you would like we can conduct an experiment. At some random and unexpected time I will call 911 and report that I saw a Mexican breaking into your home. You can tell us how it goes.

You assume that the "nature of a police officer" is to be a "neutral character"?
If so, what gave you that idea?

It is almost scary that you think the self-serving story told by the police is the "only authority". Why do you completely and totally dismiss the word of a renowned award-winning scholar from the most prestigious university in the world? What is it about him that makes you automatically assume he is lying about what happened?

TripleBam wrote:

Are you trolling or do you honestly believe that police officers "know the laws"?
If you do honestly believe that, what is the basis for your belief?

As a neutral party (having no personal investment in this topic) I'm having to side with 3Bam on this one.

First of all, he's looking at the facts. He's not attacking anyone, but DCMH and LeadSalad, you guys are nit picking everything he's saying, looking for any little hole you can attack. This kind of attack isn't very persuasive, at least in my opinion.

The cop acted in an appropriate way, I think. I would really only have a problem if they actually did anything about the whole "breaking into your own house" thing.

Apprehension isn't really that bad you know. Police do (but shouldn't) make mistakes, but there's no harm done as long as they rectify them. I would expect an immediate release and apology from whoever took place in his arrest.

The professor isn't in the wrong, and the police officer(s) isn't (aren't) in the wrong either. Everyone is just getting all upset about supposed racism. Psshaw...racism is so 20th century.

...

Says 21 year old white boy from Elwood, Indiana. I guess I don't have any credentials to talk about racists.

Quote:

“Nigger, don't let the sun set on you in Elwood” --Sign posted in Elwood, Indiana, 1966

The KKK used to be really big in Elwood. They're still around, but they're harder to spot since they don't run around in their sheets anymore.

The DA just dropped all charges against him.

Other random fact about the guy, Time magazine once named him one of the 25 most influential Americans.

So. What? I don't care if he was THE most influential. It doesn't mean he's exempt from any laws.
