Obama is OUR president now.  If you don't like his policies, in another 4 years there will be another election.  In the meantime, we have a lot of problems to address together in this country to repair the damage done by 8 years of Neoconservative ideas in action.

Wait wait wait... where were you when Bush was elected saying the same thing?  We gotta band together?  It's my turn to say "fuck that."  I don't believe Obama is looking out for America's best interests and frankly I will cast doubt until he proves otherwise.

  • He doesn't owe anybody political favors.
  • He's a "New Democrat". He has redefined the Democratic party and, as such, won't be bound as strictly to the expectations that have traditionally been held.
  • People really, really want something new and I suspect will be more willing to support even the candidate of the opposing party to make something new happen - politicians and civilians alike.
  • He's young and idealistic which will energize the population and, hopefully, other politicians
  • He's a minority and will energize those demographics
  • He represents progression which I suspect will make our ally countries happy, and hopefully make us feel better about ourselves as a nation that often considers itself progressive, but is usually rather stagnant.
  • He's not a businessman. His first and last thought of the day won't be "How can I make myself and my buds some money?"
He's a new breed of politician. I'm not sure what to expect, but I wouldn't expect more of the same.

Will I stand up and say "I voted for him" if something goes sour? Of course I will. Because even if some things turn out bad, he was still the better choice than McCain.

The electoral college tends to follow the popular vote, so in the larger sense, each individual vote counts.  The difference between the electoral college and a purely popular vote is that battleground locations around the country take on key importance, rather than simply winning over population centers.  While the original purpose of the electoral college -- colonies-turned-states with higher populations overpowering smaller states and imposing massive cultural changes on smaller states (the same logic underlying the split between the Senate and House of Representatives) -- may be largely outdated, the current effect of forcing candidates to fight for votes all over the country is still far better than the simpler but more potentially disenfranchising alternative, IMO.

But the popular vote within the state ends at the state. From there it's who "the state" wants. If you're vote is in the minority within the state, then nothing is being passed on to the presidential race. If all states split Electoral Votes proportionate to the vote within, it wouldn't be so bad. At least then everyones' voice carries to the final race.

He's anything but a new breed of politician.  If anything, he's a populist like Bill Clinton.  I'm not swooned by his buzz words of change and hope which are just ambiguous concepts with no actual substance.  It's possible his new Chief of Staff will be Emanual who is an incredibly Machieavellian political activist in his own right who convinced Obama to break his first promise and not take public campaign funds.

If you think Obama is something different, you're enchanted by fine words.

Won't be much different if Obama ever has to be impromptu in which he stutters worse than Milton in Office Space.
